John Gould Song-Birds: Original Antique Lithographs, of Perching Birds & Passerines

John Gould had a passion for Ornithology!  As a result, he collaborated and directed, world class works on birds. All of his work dates from 1832-1888. Therefore, all of the antiques you are viewing are about 150 years old. Gould’s birds had to be completed by his associates, because he passed in 1888. His work issued by subscription in parts, as they published in London England during the mid-19th century.

Song Birds: Framed Woodpeckers, by Francois Martinet, & Compte de Buffon, 1770-1783

Extraordinary, framed antique prints of passerines. 18th century hand-colored engravings, of the Ivory Billed Woodpecker, and other songbirds by Francois Martinet. The plates are sourced from 18th century books, entitled Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux. The books published Paris, France 1770-1783. Francois Martinet worked for George Leclerc Compte de Buffon. Together they published these rare ornithology prints with a staff of 70, over a period of 13 years.  The later, Buffon, was in charge of the King of France’s Royal Collections of a scientific nature.

Each of these woodpeckers are antique prints which published Paris France 1770-1783. A copper plate engraving was specially crafted and printed onto a hand-made hand-laid paper.  The watercolor illumination, was added at the time of publication.

Anne framed them in gloss burlwood molding, using high end archival materials.  Archival double matting is crème on crème, with just the slightest hint of a butter tint. Each piece measures 17 x 20.”  Call Anne at 413-245-4197 or email Anne:  anne@annehallantiqueprints.com

John Gould Passerines.  As a result of Gould’s passion for Ornithology, he produced world class works on birds from 1832-1888.  Spanning 56 years, Gould’s work on birds had to be completed by his associates.  Issued in parts and sold by subscription. Published in London, England.

Francois Martinet: Antique Engravings, from Histoire Naturelle des  Oiseaux 1770-1783

Hand colored engravings sourced from Histoire Naturelle.

The famous French Ornithologist Francois Martinet had an intense interest in birds in the 18th Century.  Consequently Martinet produced one of the finest works the French ever published on Birds.  He employed a staff of 70 people.  Still the work took some 13 years, from 1770-1783 to complete. These are watercolor copper plate engravings on heavy laid rag paper.

This is the work of Reverend F.O. Morris.  These old engravings are of perching birds or passerines from 1890. They are English hand colored wood engravings.  A “birder”  Reverend and his congregation, collected the specimens, and created this encyclopedic collection about Ornithology. Passerines are Perching & Feeder Types of Birds

All of our antique lithographs, and hand-colored engravings, published pre-1900. We have decorative antique prints of robins, finches, woodpeckers, titmice, thrushes and other pretty little birds. Some are even framed professionally. Folio John Gould hand-colored lithographs date 1832-1888.

A special focus of ours is antique prints of songbirds (Passerines) that published from 1640-1900. I live to see wildlife and have been fortunate enough to catch some great footage on film including these woodpeckers. The video is of two pileated woodpeckers courting one another.  It went on nearly an hour and caught our interest forever. Duration: 5 minutes long. Please give it a thumbs up.
