Nests Eggs of Birds! Our antique prints will bring nature indoors. All of them, are sourced 18th-19th century ornithology bookplates. Published in the form of exquisite lithographs & engravings, years ago. Many almost look modern, and they all seem to honor the subject. Authors & ornithologists represented include Cornelius Nozeman, John Gould, Thomas Gentry & F.O. Morris.

Nests Eggs of Birds sourced from Nederlandsche Vogelen, published 1779-1820.

Some of the most famous naturalists of the 18th Century collaborated in producing one of the finest printed works, ever published on Ornithology: Nederlandsche Vogelen. It is the work of Cornelius Nozeman, Christian Sepp and Martinus Houttyn.  It took an astonishing 59 years to publish the work in it’s entirety.

The following birds and their nests, are the work of Cornelius Nozeman, Christian Sepp and his son Janus Sepp, and Martinus Houttyn. They are some of the most famous 18th century naturalists, specializing in Ornithology. It required a huge collaboration to produce, one of the finest works ever published on Ornithology: Nederlandsche Vogelen. Also known as the Birds of the Netherlands. Remember the Netherlands included their far away, trading posts those days.  

This lovely engraving shows the birdsnests with 6 white eggs in it. A stunning antique engraving. Representative of the interests of man, for birds and birding throughout history.

At the time of production the cost of the set of Nederlandsche Vogelen, was 525 Dutch Florins, or $6000 in today’s currency, making it the most expensive book ever published up to that time.

Cornelius Nozeman, Christian Sepp & Martinus Houttyn were the masterminds behind this brilliant bird book.

Thomas Gentry: Birds & Nests of the United States

Nests Eggs of American Birds, by Thomas Gentry. Each color applied with individual limestone plates, by an experienced lithographers, over a century ago. This obsolete printing method was used widely in the late 1800’s, and replaced with photomechanical printing.  The printing technique is called chromolithography, and the colors practically leap off the plate.  Each antique lithograph, measures about 9 1/4 x 12″ Click here to contact us.

Antique Hand Colored Lithographs of nests-eggs!  These are the work of Reverend F.O. Morris.  His Nests and Eggs of Birds were published in 1890. The original book plates are English hand colored lithographs.  This means they were printed from a limestone plate and water colored by hand.   Each  antique lithograph measures @7×10. Bird nest engravings and lithographs illustrated by famous ornithologists including Morris, Hewitson, Gentry, Gould and Nozeman. Fascinated with eggs and nests wild birds? Our original antique lithographs & engravings, were by authored by early ornithologists including F.O. Morris, Thomas Gentry, Cornelius Nozeman and James Bolton.  Oology books were published with pictures in the form of these now, antique hand-colored engravings & lithographs, of birds shown with their nests & eggs. As usual, all of the decorative antique prints, are antiques, were produced from the mid 1700’s to 1900.

Beautifully illustrated by Cornelius Nozeman, who lived from 1721 to 1786. Nozeman was a Dutch minister & an ornithologist. It was Nozeman that wrote the text for the first two volumes. In 1786, Nozeman died, with most of the descriptions for the second volume written, which was published in 1789.

The renowned engraver & artist Christian Sepp drew the illustrations. Sepp is best known for his meticulous drawings and his passion for beautiful detail which is evident in this work. The majority of Sepp’s drawings were transferred onto copper plates and etched and engraved by himself. It was in the first two volumes which were directly created by these well known ornithologists, artists and engravers. Sepp’s son, Jan Christian, a bookseller, interested in the study of natural history and engraving, published the first volume. In 1775, Christian Sepp died and Jan Christian completed the second volume.

Martinus Houttuyn, also a famous naturalist, continued the work for the third volume (published in 1797). Houttuyn died in 1798, and it was not until 1809 that the fourth volume was published, without the name of the writer.The huge project was finally finished in 1829, by the grandson of Christian Sepp, Jan Sepp, and Coenraad Jacob Temminck.

An Important & Expensive 18th Century Ornithology Book on Nests-Eggs & Birds

This is the most important and first study in the Netherlands of ornithology at that time. The birds are depicted as they are in life, said to be depicted close to life sized and in their environment. This great work, is well known for the wonderful combinations of birds with their nests and eggs, some of the best ever done.

The frontice pieces are some of the best examples of bird artwork ever done. Each piece is full folio, hand colored copper plate engravings, on fine hand made hand laid rag paper. At the time of production the cost of the set was 525 Dutch Florins, $6000 in today’s currency, the most expensive book ever published up to that time.
