We sell authentic antique lithographs and antique whale engravings published during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries at Anne Hall Antique Prints. Some of the antique book plates are sourced from American books while others come from European books.

Many books published during the 17th 18th and 19th centuries were illustrated. First books were illustrated with engravings. Some of the engravings were illuminated with water colors. They were printed from firstly from copperplate engraving. Later steel plate and wood engravings were faster to publish.

Other books were illustrated with whale lithographs. A lithograph was printed from a limestone plate. Some were hand colored while other lithographs were hand colored with watercolors. Moreover in the 1870’s through circa 1900 many lithographs were printed in colors. Each and every color from an individual key stoned limestone plate.  Hence the word chromolithography.
